The End

Grandma sleeps in her hospital bed.

Her mind is gone, yet her body won’t follow,

Despite pleading God to join the dead.

Her family lingers, eyes distant and hollow.

Grandma kept herself alive until

Granddaughter could see her once more

Eyes meet with recognition, and tears spill

Before grandmother returns to her slumber forevermore.

Through her pain, her lungs still inflate,

Doctors offer too few shots of morphine

They say she still lives due to Fate

And it wouldn’t be right to intervene.

Is it the end now, did her breathing cease?

I loved her, I did, yet all I feel is release.
