Perfect Tomboy… Or not

I’d do anything to avoid doing a skip and a twirl

And yet, Jem says I act too much like a girl.

It’s hard to avoid being who you are meant to be

But some of Jem’s schemes are too risky, even for me.

If I had the choice, I’d rather be called names

Than get in trouble playin’ my brother’s stupid games

But would I really walk a yonder talkin’ all frivolous?

Oh please, you can’t be serious.

A few years ago, Jem and I were like butter and bread

But now, he’s always gettin’ up on the wrong side of bed

Atticus says it’s because he’s changin’,

But I want the old Jem back, not one who’s always ragin’!

And now he’s also takin’ Dill away from me,

My friend, my companion, my destiny,

Just because I am not a boy

Doesn’t mean I have to play with another toy

And why can’t I listen to their conversation?

This causes me real aggravation.

Sometimes I would just rather be a mister

Than just another silly, ‘spiting’ sister

I hope in the future, Jem will improve,

So I won’t always be someone he has to approve
